basic drawing & painting
VISUAL ART
-
This course is your chance to unleash your inner artist and dive into the basics of drawing and painting! We will start with the very foundations of art – lines and shapes. But don't be fooled – there's a whole lot of creativity even in the simplest of lines! We'll then move on to drawing still-life objects, because who doesn't love adding a bit of life to their art?
But wait, there's more! We'll also cover gesture drawing, because sometimes it's all about capturing the essence of a subject rather than the details. And if you've ever wanted to learn how to draw a face, then you're in luck! We'll be introducing you to the basics of portraiture too.
Now, we can't forget about the tools of the trade – dry and wet media. We'll explore the strengths and techniques of each medium, giving you an overview of their applications. By the end of this course, you'll not only have a better understanding of art but also the skills to create your own masterpieces.
-
By participating in the course, you will:
Let's start with the basics: drawing from observation means looking at something and drawing it as accurately as possible. So, grab a pencil and a piece of paper and start drawing objects around you, paying attention to their proportions and angles.
Don't worry if your drawings don't look perfect at first! Getting proportions and angles right takes practice, but the more you draw, the better you'll get.
Now, let's talk about mixed media! You'll get to work with different materials like charcoal, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, and oil. Each medium has its own unique properties, so it's important to experiment with them to see what works best for you.
Once you've chosen your medium, it's time to practice application techniques! This includes color blending, strokes, washes, adding texture, and more. Play around with different techniques to see what effects you can create.
Finally, it's time to create your own artwork! You'll get to create an interpretation of a classic piece of art (like the Mona Lisa or Starry Night), as well as a piece that reflects your own original thought and observation. Have fun with it and don't be afraid to get creative!
-
The instructor will share the materials needed prior to the classes. For the first class, bring along a sketchbook and pencils (B series).

INSTALLATION ART: RETHINKING OBJECTS AND AESTHETICS
VISUAL ART
-
Installation Art: Rethinking Objects and Aesthetics is a 10-week, studio-based journey that invites you to see art and the world around you with fresh eyes. This hands-on course explores how everyday materials and found objects can be transformed into immersive, thoughtprovoking spatial artworks. Students will challenge traditional definitions of art by working with space, context, and viewer interaction. From conceptual development to physical construction, the course encourages playful experimentation and critical thinking. Whether it's turning a broomstick into a metaphor or a room into a sensory experience, you'll discover how to reframe the familiar and create work that sparks new conversations about what art can be.
-
Participants will engage in a mix of guided exercises, material explorations, and experimental installations using simple objects. Each class will emphasize critical thinking and practical making focusing on how meaning can shift by changing the position, context, or scale of an object. Students will also visit artist studios or galleries to understand how installation works are represented professionally. Through discussions, critiques, and small-scale projects, participants will develop their own installations by the end of the course. By participating in the course, you will:
Start by rethinking the ordinary. You’ll begin by observing simple, everyday objects and asking: What else could this be? Is a broom just for cleaning, or could its position or shadow suggest something entirely different?
Get hands-on with guided exercises and experiments. Each week, you'll manipulate objects, explore materials, and respond to space which will help in learning how context, placement, and scale can completely shift meaning.
Think critically, not just make. Every session will include time for discussion, reflection, and critique. We’ll explore examples of installation art from across the world, unpacking how artists create immersive and thought-provoking works using the most basic things.
Step outside the classroom. We’ll visit artists’ studios and galleries, allowing you to see how installations are represented, displayed, and discussed in professional environments. This exposure will help bridge the gap between process and presentation.
Build towards your own installation. Through weekly projects and experiments, you’ll slowly develop your own ideas and concepts. By the end of the course, you’ll create and present a small-scale installation that reflects your unique perspective and how you now see the world a little differently.
